Thoughts on Meghan and the fallout

There is no shortage of opinions when it comes to the Sussexes. My own thoughts tend to shift from day to day. What I do find disheartening, almost absurd at times, are the countless videos dissecting Meghan’s every expression, with creators claiming to detect signs of narcissism or obsessive behaviour simply in the way she interacts with her husband. It feels desperate, as though the smallest glance or gesture must be analysed and condemned. Sometimes I just think: let the woman live.

That said, I would not pretend I have never had critical thoughts about the way their departure unfolded. But as we know, truth rarely belongs to only one side. I believe there is considerable truth in what Meghan and Harry have shared, most of it, perhaps, but it remains their perspective. And since neither King Charles, nor William and Kate, nor anyone else said to have “driven them out” has publicly engaged in a detailed rebuttal, we are left to keep an open mind.

Given the revelations that have surfaced in recent years concerning other members of the royal family, the sustained negative focus on the Sussexes increasingly feels like old news. They went through a difficult period, as we all do at times, but to my knowledge, they have done nothing illegal or morally indefensible. They are living according to their own truth and, like anyone else, trying to figure things out.

What is evident is the strength of their bond. In many ways, both princes have been fortunate to find partners with whom they share emotional closeness and practical support. Setting the two couples against one another feels unnecessary. Even if “the Fab Four” is no more, that does not mean the two households must exist as opposites. They can live parallel lives without constantly being cast in contrast. With the steps that have been taken in recent months, including Harry’s meeting with King Charles and the Sussexes’ humanitarian visit to Gaza, it feels as though something is shifting. Perhaps some form of reconciliation may lie ahead in the not-too-distant future.
